Studies on columnaris disease in guppy poecilia reticulata characteristics of flexibacter columnaris isolated from caudal fin and histopathology

Studies on columnaris disease in guppy poecilia reticulata characteristics of flexibacter columnaris isolated from caudal fin and histopathology

Bulletin of the Nippon Veterinary & Zootechnical College (38): 60-65

The three strains, NJB 4002, NJB 4003 and NJB 4004 isolated from the caudal fin of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) with fin rot were examined for the biological and biochemical characteristics, the sensitivities to seven drugs, the pathogenicity, and the histopathology. The three strains examined were identified as F. columnaris from the biological and biochemical characteristics. The sensitivities to oxytetracyclin hydrocloride, nitrofrazone and oxolinic acid for the three strains of F. columnaris were much less than F. columnaris EK28, which was used as control strain, isolated from gills of eel (Anguilla japonica) with columnaris disease. Guppies artificially infected with the three strains of F. columnaris died within 3 to 5 days after the exposure to the bacterium. As a result of the histopathological examination, many Gram negative, long rods could be found on the caudal fin, but no histopathological changes could be observed in the examined internal organs.
