Studies on control of euryale ferox salisb. in fish ponds

Journal of Aquaculture in the Tropics 6(2): 187-192

The thorny lily Euryale ferox (Salisb.) grows luxuriantly in fish ponds attaining as high a density as 5.8 kg/m2. The peak period of flowering and fruiting is from March to July. The plant can be effectively cleared by application of 6 kg (a.i.)/ha of 2,4-D sodium salt in six weeks. Following kill and disintegration of weeds there is an increase in concentration of nitrate and phosphate resulting in increase of plankton population. The treatment has no effect on the fish population. The cost of clearance by chemicals comes to Rs. 1,153/ha as compared to Rs. 4,000/ha by manual labour.
