Studies on cultural methods of miyauchi iyo citrus iyo hort. ex tanaka iv. effects of pruning on the growth yield and fruit quality

Bulletin of the Yamaguchi Agricultural Experiment Station (41): 93-98

The effect of pruiting method for the top-grafted tree of orange 'Miyauchi-Iyo' on the growth, yield, and quality was examined. 1. After the somewhat strong pruning of heading back as the main subject, the development of current shoot was flourishing, the number of bearing flower was intermediate, and the rate of flower with leaf was more. After the weak pruning, the number of leaf was more, but the development of current shoot was meager, the number of bearing flower was more, and the rate of direct flower was higher. 2. After the intermediate pruning, the enlargement of tree volume was larger, and after the strong and weak pruning it was smaller, and especially after the weak pruning the enlargement after two years from top-grafting was extremely small. 3. After the strong pruning, the thick and long fruit-bearing mother branches and fruit-bearing branches developed, and after the weak pruning the slender and somewhat short fruit-bearing mother branches and fruit-bearing branches were made, and also they tended to be shortened year by year. 4. Although mean fruit weight increased by the strong pruning, the yield was less and the quality of fruit was somewhat inferior. After the weak pruning, the quality of fruit was excellent and the yield was more, but mean fruit weight was small. 5. From above-mentioned results, it is considered that for the pruning method on the top-grafted tree of 'Miyauchi-Iyo' the intermediate pruning of heading back as the main subject is appropriate on the consideration of establishment of reserve branch. It is necessary that the degree of pruning in this case is retained within 30% of leaf removing rate.
