Studies on field resistance of different cultivars and crosses of cabbage against cabbage caterpillar pieris brassicae l. lepidoptera pieridae

Studies on field resistance of different cultivars and crosses of cabbage against cabbage caterpillar pieris brassicae l. lepidoptera pieridae

Zeitschrift fuer Pflanzenkrankheiten und Pflanzenschutz 98(3): 293-300

Nineteen cultivars and one cross in 1982, 50 cultivars and four crosses in 1983, and 41 cultivars and 23 crosses in 1984 were screened under field conditions against the cabbage caterpillar, Pieris brassicae, in Kulu Valley, India. The cultivars were graded into different categories of resistance based on the population of caterpillars per plant. None of the cultivars was immune to the pest. 'Red Pickling' and 'Red Rock Mammoth' were highly resistant in 1983 and 1984 but moderately resistant in 1982. 'Red Drum Head' was highly resistant in 1984 but moderately resistant in 1982 and 1983. 'EC 90730' and 'ARU Glory' were moderately resistant in 1984. Except 'ARU Glory', all are red cultivars. Several crosses were made between red and green cultivars. Six hybrids were moderately resistant but none was highly resistant. The best hybrid was 'Red Rock Mammoth' .times. 'September' which was moderately resistant and produced medium sized compact heads. But the veins were purple which resulted in less market value. Most of the agronomically good cultivars were highly susceptible like 'Golden Acre', 'Pusa Drum Head', 'September', 'Synthetic', 'Selection-8', 'Pride of India', 'India Market', 'Coloner Market', 'Louisiana All Year', 'Copenhagen Market', 'Pride of Asia', etc.
