By using 7 early lactating heifers changes of teat length, teat diameter, teat end thickness, temperature of teat end and teat base after calf suckling, hand milking and machine milking were investigated. Changes in teat length were .+-. 1 mm for all milking methods. The teat diameter was changed by calf suckling and hand milking in a range of 0.2 mm whereas machine milking evoked an increase of 1.2-2.7 mm. Calf suckling and hand milking reduced the teat end thickness by 9.1% and 5.7% respectively. Machine milking caused an increase in teat end thickness by more than 17%. Teat end temperature was increased by calf suckling and hand milking and decreased by machine milking. From the teat tissue reactions established it is concluded that machine milking causes a higher new infection risk than calf suckling and hand milking.
