Studies on the breeding behavior of five oriental pear cultivars of Pyrus pyrifolia NAKAI var. culta NAKAI were carried out during 1982 to 1984. The parent cultivars were Mansamgil (Okusankichi, O), Keumchochoo (Imamura-aki, I), Danabae (D), Shingo (Niitaka, N) and Paldal (P). The crossed combinations of examined seedlings from the parent cultivars were IxD, IxP, OxD, OxP and NxD and the outlined results of the studies were as follows. 1. The inheritance of leaf and fruit skin color appeared to be under the control of polygene. The leaf color of spring leaf extension stage and summer leaf extension stage showed that Red and Pink-tint were dominant over Green(G). The fruit skin color showed that Russetting Brown(RB) was dominant over G or intermediate of RB and G. 2. The time of flowering and petal fall showed that the early characteristics were dominant over late ones. The ripening seasons showed that the early maturing habits were dominant over the late ripening ones for the majority of seedlings from cross combinations. 3. The resistance to pear scab and leaf spot was dominant over the susceptibility. 4. The genetic make up of parents tested was heterozygous over characteristics observed. All the characteristics showed a continuous variation and seemed to be quantitative characters. 5. The bloom period was positively and significantly correlated with petal fall. The maturing time showed no correlation to both the bloom and petal fall.
