This study was carried out to get basic information which will be utilized to the breeding program for cold tolerance in rice [Oryza sativa]. Resistance to the seedling cold tolerance and inheritance at segregating generation were investigated and the results were summarized as follows: The general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for the resistance to the seedling cold tolerance was significant and the value of GCA was greater than that of SCA. The rice varieties, Seolagbyeo and Samnambyeo at SCA for the resistance to the seedling cold tolerance showed resistant reaction, otherwise Tongil type varieties showed susceptible reaction. There was no regular tendency in SCA however, the crosses which had Seolagbyeo, Samnambyeo, and IR20654-RRR-15-1 as their parentage showed resistant reaction in SCA for the seedling cold tolerance. The segregation for seedling cold tolerance at F23 generation showed resistant and continuous variation in the almost all the crosses, but the cross which had IR20654-RRR-15-1 and Cheongcheongbyeo as its parentage showed transgressive segregation to resistant reaction.
