Study of improvement of mulching culture method in onion allium cepa l. 1. influence of mulch materials and times on growth and yield

Research Reports of the Rural Development Administration 33(2 HORTIC): 31-36

Effects of transparent and black polyethylene film mulch at 3 mulch times(Oct. 30, Nov. 25, Dec. 20) on growth and yield of onion in autumn crop were investigated. Mean of soil water content from Nov. 25 to Apr. 25 was 2.1 .apprx. 2.8% higher in the mulch plots than that of control and soil temperature was highest in the transparent PE film mulch plot and lowest in the control. Growth of plant was accelerated by PE film mulch and earlier mulch times. The rate of plant loss during overwintering was increased in the control plot but that of bolted or doubled bulb in the transparent PE film mulch plot. Yield was highest in the transparent PE film mulch plot and increased by earlier mulch times.
