Subjective response to changes in road traffic noise a model

Subjective response to changes in road traffic noise a model

Journal of Sound and Vibration 141(1): 43-54

Recent research into subjective response to traffic noise has shown that where a decrease (or increase) in noise exposure occurs, residents' dissatisfaction with traffic noise decreases (or increases) to an extent greater than would be predicted from findings in steady state conditions, and that these effects are relatively persistent over time. We here discuss the implications of these findings for models of noise annovance. We examine in detail two existing models of the mechanism of response to change. Neither these nor other existing models seem able to explain the results, and we therefore present a new model in which response to noise is characterized as a combination of sensitization to some effects of noise, but adaptive coping and with other effects.
