The beta dimethylsulfoniopropionate dmsp content of macroalgae from antarctica and southern chile

The beta dimethylsulfoniopropionate dmsp content of macroalgae from antarctica and southern chile

Botanica Marina 33(2): 143-146

The .beta.-dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) content of extreme cold water macroalgae isolated from Antartica and Southern Chile was determined by gas-liquid chromatography. Within the members of the Rhodophyceae and Phaeophycea only traces of DMSP could be detected, which agrees with data from the literature on red and brown algal species from temperature regions. In contrast, all eulittoral, antarctic Chlorophyceae contained higher concentrations as compared to macroalgae from temperature waters. This suggets a relation between the DMSP accumulation and temperature, possibly as part of an 'antifreeze' system, analogous to the role of DMSP as an osmolyte in many algae subjected to variations in salinity.
