The effect of method of budding and grafting on the quantity and quality of the tart cherry trees produced in the nursery

The effect of chip and shield budding, and of winter bench grafting on the quantity and quality of tart cherry trees produced in the nursery was investigated during three years. Cultivars English Morello, Nefris and North Star were budded or grafted on the seedlings of Prunus avium, Prunus mahaleb and on the vegetatively propagated F 12/1. The experiment had three replications with 40 rootstocks on each plot arranged at random. The rootstocks were planted in the nursery of the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture in Skierniewice on the podzolic soil at the distances of 90 .times. 35 cm. The highest number of the three tart cherry cultivars (mean 79%) was obtained for bench grafting. The number of the maiden trees obtained after chip budding was 53% and did not differ much from the number obtained from traditional shield budding. Highest number of maiden trees of the diameter over 9 mm (mean 51.6%) was given by winter bench grafting. The number of maiden trees of the diameter over 9 mm given by both methods of budding were similar (mean 35%).
