The influence of row spacing seed rate and sowing time on overwintering and yield in winter oilseed rape brassica napus

In 30 field experiments with winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) in the southernmost part of Sweden in 1980-1985 the effects of two row spacings (12 and 48 cm), three seed rates (5, 10 and 15 kg/ha) and two sowing times (11 and 24 August) on overwintering and yield were investigated. On average, the highest yield was obtained after early sowing. The influence of row spacing was more pronounced for late than for early sowing. Generally, the narrow row spacing gave the higher yield, especially after late sowing. The optimum seed rate depended on both row spacing and sowing time and was as follows: Early sowing, narrow row spacing: 8-12 kg/ha; Early sowing, wide row spacing: 6-9 kg/ha; Late sowing, narrow row spacing: 12-15 kg/ha; Late sowing, wide row spacing: 8-12 kg/ha.
