In a randomised outpatient double-blind study including 94 patients with various forms of acne the therapeutic effect of two dosages of the Saccharomyces boulardii preparation Perenterol, 100 mg tid and 250 mg tid, was determined. After 5 months of treatment (September to April) the number of papules within a previously defined skin area decreased by 56.1% under 100 mg tid and by 56.5% under 250 mg tid. The doctors' regimen assessment of therapeutic efficacy at the end of the trial was good or very good in 32.6% under lower dosage and 29.1% under higher dosage. Despite the more rapid occurrence of the therapeutic effect with higher dosage no significant difference was found between the two dosages. Severe side effects causing discontinuation of the treatment were reported in two cases only. In acne therapy with S. boulardii the dosage of 250 mg tid seems to provide some advantage during the first three months and may be reduced afterwards to 100 mg tid.
