Utilization of sunflower straw and its heads as sole source of roughage in complete feeds for sheep

Utilization of sunflower straw and its heads as sole source of roughage in complete feeds for sheep

Indian Journal of Animal Sciences 59(1): 128-132

Mixed grass hay (MGH, control), sunflower straw-meal (SSM) and sunflower head-meal (SHM) as sole source or roughage (50%) were offered to Nellore ram lambs in a 180-day growth trial (6 in each group) and a metabolic trial (3 in each group), using completely randomized design. The average daily gains were not significantly different among the 3 treatments though the feed efficiency was higher on feed containing MGH. Voluntary intake of dry matter and the nutrients except the nitrogen-free extract were comparable on all the feeds. Positive nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus balances were recorded on all the 3 groups. Lambs of group 3 (SHM) had higher dressing percentage, higher bone: meat ratio and lower edible: nonedible organs ratio than the other 2 groups. The results suggested that SSM and SHM can be used as sole source of roughage in place of MGH in the formulation of complete feed for sheep without affecting the growth rate and nutrient utilization.
