A particulate fraction obtained from mesophyll cells of Zinnia elegans that were differentiating into tracheary elements exhibited xylan synthase activity, catalyzing the transfer of 14C-xylose from UDP-D-[U-14C]-xylose into 1,4-linked xylan. The activity increased transiently at the same time as thickening of secondary cell walls occurred, a process that is accompanied by the deposition of cellulose, xylan and lignin.
