The effects of benomyl and a combination of benomyl and carbendazim was less in wheat monoculture than in long-term grain cultivation. Beginning in 1982, there was no increase in yield after 10 years of using benomyl. Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides infection remained diminished despite simultaneous infection with Rhizotonia cerealis. Cereal eyespot exerts but a slight influence on yield in a 20 year wheat monoculture. A certain equilibrium between pathogens and antagonists seems to hold sway. Under these conditions, the effect of fungicides as a method for assuring yield should be integrated into an ecologically and economically optimized strategy in combination with plant cultivation aspects. As long as P. herpotrichoides infection remains within tolerable limits of 25-30 percent, the use of fungicides should be rejected for economic and ecological reasons, and to prevent the development of resistance as well. More important is plant protection integrated into the succession of crops to create the most suitable conditions for a combination of plant cultivation, technological, improvement and breeding measures, and at the same time to support the self-regulation capacity of crop rotation.
