The purpose of this survey is to develop a simple and fast technique to detect antibiotics in milk. This technique is for use by the dairy industries and the official inspection service. Different tests were developed with some dilutions of ampicillin (AMP), cephalosporin (CEF), oxytetracycline (OXI), streptomycin (EST) quemycetin (QUE), spectinomycin (ESP) and gentamycin (GEN) to test the capacity to reduce methylene blue and the resazurine test by Streptococcus thermophilus. The sterilized milk samples with different dilutions of these antibiotics were analysed according the reduction potential of resazurine, and methylene blue with or without heating (85-90 degree C/10 min). The results showed an excellent capacity to detect small quantities of antibiotic, with the resazurine method or with the methylene blue method. The reduction method with methylene blue detected the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of AMP (0.06-mu-g/ml), CEF, (0.08-mu-g/ml), OXI (0.5-mu-g/ml), EST (1.0-mu-g/ml), QUE (0.8-mu-g/ml), ESP (0.2-mu-g/ml) and GENT (0.05-mu-g/ml). After heating (85-90 degree C/10 minutes), the mic detected by the methylene blue were: AMP (0.07-mu-g/ml), CEF (0.08-mu-g/ml), OXI (0.1-mu-g/ml), EST (4.0-mu-g/ml), QUE (0.9-mu-g/ml), ESP (0.2-mu-g/ml) and GEN (0.1-mu-g/ml). The reduction method with resazurine detected the MIC of AMP (0.07-mu-g/ml), CEF (0.06-mu-g/ml), OXI (0.05-mu-g/ml) EST (2.0-mu-g/ml), QUE (0.2-mu-g/ml), ESP (0.6-mu-g/ml) and GEN (0.05-mu-g/ml). After heating (85-90 degree C/10 min) the MIC were: AMP (0.07-mu-g/ml), CEF (0.08-mu-g/ml), OXI (0.1-mu-g/ml) EST (2.0-mu-g/ml), and GEN (0.2-mu-g/ml). It is believed that this test can be widely used by the inspection services and by industries in order to avoid the use of low quality milks.
