Australerpeton cosgriffi n.g., n.sp., a Late Permian rhinesuchoid amphibian from Brazil

Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciencias 70(1): 124-137, March

The Rio do Rasto Formation (Upper Permian of the Parana Basin, Brazil) had been considered as barren of tetrapods since the well-known geological memoir produced by I. C. White in 1908. The field work developed by the Institute of Geosciences (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul), from 1974 to 1984, however, changed markedly this characterization. The finding of new Rio do Rasto outcrops in the Serra do Cadeado area, Parana State, revealed a large array of tetrapod remains, including the dicynodont Endothiodon and many specimens of short and long-snouted rhinesuchoid amphibians. The present paper is dedicated to the osteological description of the main cranial materials of the long-snouted forms.
