Breeding and selection in pig breeders associations

Breeding and selection in pig breeders associations

Veterinarski Glasnik 48(5-6): 389-394

The incredibly rapid development of pig farming in the world in the past 10 years can be explained by the excellent organization of work on pig improvement. Associations of pig farmers or companies which manufacture hybrid pigs spearhead work on pig improvement. The central role in this have nucleus breeding stock and examinations of large numbers of animals on farms and in specialized test stations and centers for artificial insemination, through which progress achieved in nucleus breeding stock is transferred to commercial farms. The creation and commercialization of a new genetic basis, new quality, has become a specialized, highly skilled, very costly and very profitable business. Due to high costs, the business cannot be organized and financed by one firm or one abbatoir alone, primarily because they do not have a sufficiently large market to enable a return on the invested funds. It was therefore concluded that the newly formed association of producers of pigs and pig meat must become the principle factor in pig production as soon as possible. The unification of all links of the production chain, from the production of the piglet to sales of ham, and through joint investments in improving meat quality, the pig industry could become competitive on the home market and abroad.
