Breeding and trials of new wine grape B1106 hybrid

Breeding and trials of new wine grape B1106 hybrid

Bulletin of Taiwan Tobacco Research Institute Taiwan Tobacco & Wine Monopoly Bureau 0(37): 57-67

In order to improve the quality of the grape wine, hundreds of grape varieties were introduced from foreign contries in the Tobacco Research Institute, Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau (TTWMB). Varietal selection and hybridization have also been conducted under the subtropical environmental conditions in Taiwan. This breeding project included hybridization selection and varietal trial through several years. Wine making and tasting were committed by the Nan Tou Winery, TTWMB. Hybrid of B1106 was selected with good qualities, productivity as well as promising for the red wine making. The B1106 hybrid was crossed between Muscat Bailey A and Himrod Seedless. Seeds were collected in 1975. B1106 hybrid was selected from seedlings in 1981. Characteristics of the B1106 hybrid performed vigorous with normal flowering and fruiting under local weather conditions. But the berries and clusters are small with middle class of yield. Comparison with other varieties, 18.4 and 20.1 Brix of the sugar content were recorded both summer and winter fruits, with lower acidity which is better than the Black Queen. Astringent test of the berry are flat. Although the color, flavour and aroma of the wine which made of the B1106 hybrid are much better than those of the Black Queen's.
