Coronavirus infection in monkeys as a model of human infection

Experimental model of coronavirus infection in Macaca mullata is described for the first time. Electron microscopy was used to detect the viruses. Data on the course of spontaneous and induced infection were analyzed in 20 and 4 monkeys respectively. In 3 monkeys, experimental infection involved gastrointestinal tract (duodenitis and enteritis) and in one monkey, coronavirus infection was manifested as pneumonia. Cyclophosphane activated persistent coronavirus infection. Spontaneous coronavirus infection can be used as a model to study unresolved problems as pathogenesis, diagnosis and epizootiology for better understanding of human infection epidemiology.
