Cytogenetics of interspecific hybrids and backcross progenies from Oryza sativa X O. minuta crosses

Somatic chromosome number and meiotic chromosome pairing were examined in F1 hybrids and BC progenies from Oryza sativa (AA) X O. minuta (BBCC) crosses. All hybrids were triploid with 36 chromosomes.The hybrids showed irregular meiosis with mostly univalents. The mean meiotic pairing obtained was 29.31(16-36)Is + 3.32(0-10)IIs + 0.016(0-1)IIIs + 0.002(0-1)IVs with 3.46(0-13) chiasmata per cell. The chromosome numbers of 17 BC1 plants varied from 44 to 48 and from 24 to 37 in the BC2 plants. The mean bivalents in the BC1s varied from 9.83 (7-14) up to 13.90 (11-19). In the BC2 plants, except the 24-chromosome BC2, the means of bivalents were from 8.58 (6-12) to 11.18 (8-17). Majority of the bivalents observed in both BC1 and BC2 were ring-shaped. For the 24-BC2, the meiosis was more regular. Of the 60 PMCs examined, 60% showed 1211s, 23.3% showed I Ills + 21s, 13.3% showed 10IIs + 4Is and 3.3% showed 9IIs + 6Is.
