Effect of combined GnRH, temporary and definitive weaning on postpartum anestrus in Zebu cows in the humid tropics

Effect of combined GnRH, temporary and definitive weaning on postpartum anestrus in Zebu cows in the humid tropics

Veterinaria - Mexico 27(4): 265-269

This experiment was conducted in order to find alternatives to solve the problem of postpartum anestrus in Bos indicus cows. Thirty-eight Gyr and Indobrazil anesuic cows, between 90 to 120 days postpartum, and in good body condition, were used. The animals were randomly allocated to four experimental groups: Seven cows (Treatment A (TA)) were given an intramuscular injection of bucerelin (GnRH) at a dose of 20 mg, and their calves were temporarily weaned for 72 h. Twelve cows (TB) did not receive the bucerelin injection, but their calves were temporarily weaned as in TA; nine cows (TC) received the bucerelin injection and their calves were weaned definitively, and ten cows (TD), received the GnRH injection and their calves continued suckling. The cows were observed twice daily, in the morning and in the afternoon for 45 consecutive days after the application of hormone, in order to detect cows in estrus. Dams were artificially inseminated (AI) 12 hours after estrus was detected. The following variables were calculated: Interval from GnRH treatment to AI (IT-AI), percent of cows not returning to estrus and pregnancy rates. The percent of cows that showed estrus was statistically higher (P lt 0.01) for TC (7/9) compared to TD (5/10), TA (2/7) and TB (2/12), these latter treatments did not differ among them (P gt 0.05). The IT-AI was significantly lower (P lt 0.01) for TA (9 +- 2 days) in comparison to TD, TB and TC (29 +- 2.9, 35 +- 6 and 52 t 9 days, respectively) which did not differ between them (P gt 0.05). Percent of cows not returning to estrus was 88.9%, 100%, 66.6% and 70%, for TA to TD, respectively, and was not statistically different among the treatments (P gt 0.05). Pregnancy rate was 28.6% (2/7). 41.7% (5/12), 22.2% (2/9) and 10% (1/10) for TA to TD, respectively. Fertility for AI services was 100% for TA, TB and TD, but only 40% for TC (P lt 0.01). It is concluded that the combination of GnRH injection and definitively weaning of calves, was the most efficient treatment to decrease the postpartum anestrus; however, it did not improve pregnancy rates to first service.
