Effects of natural and artificial chilling durations of 2-8 weeks at 9 degree C on seed maturity, seedstalk heights, umbel number, seed yields and subsequent germination of the harvested seed in carrot cv. Nantes were evaluated in 1991/92 across four locations representing two agro-ecological zones in Kenya, selected on the basis of different temperature effects. Carrot plants in the warmer upper midland (UM) zone reached 50% of final seed maturity 50 to over 100 d earlier than those in the cooler upper highland (UH) zone for most treatments in both years. Days to final seed maturity were affected similarly. Seedstalk heights, umbel per plant, seed yields and subsequent germination of the harvested seed increased significantly (P lt 0.05) with increased durations of chilling within each location. Mean seedstalk heights were lowest in the warmer UM zone and highest in the cooler UH zone. Plants in the warmer UM zone produced higher mean seed yields and germination percentages than those at the cooler UH zone.
