Purpose: To evaluate the effects of erythromycin on human gastrointestinal motility. Methods: 14 Volunteers were given either intravenous (7 mg/kg) or oral (500 mg) erythromycin. The gastrointestinal motility was recorded and compared before and after the administration of the drug. Results: Gastric MMC was interrupted after i.v. erythromycin and replaced by irregular contraction pattern. The contracts of stomach were increased from 19 to 63 (P lt 0.01) and the amplitude was increased from 6.67 apprx 10 kPa to gt 13.33 kPa. In the oral erythromycin group the number of MMC increased from 6 to 15 and the duration was decreased (P lt 0.05). Different from the stomach the contract of small intestine was significantly decreased after the erythromycin administration. Conclusions: As erythromycin has different effects on stomach and small intestine it can be used for treatment of gastroparesis but not for pseudo obstruction of intestine.
