Effects of practical dietary retinol supplements on hepatic retinol retention and on alpha-tocopherol concentrations in plasma and selected tissues of growing piglets

Effects of practical dietary retinol supplements on hepatic retinol retention and on alpha-tocopherol concentrations in plasma and selected tissues of growing piglets

Monatshefte für Veterinärmedizin 48(2): 67-70

ISSN/ISBN: 0026-9263

A feeding experiment was carried out with 3 times 6 piglets from 6 to 24 kg live weight to study the effects of practical vitamin A supplements of 4, 8 and 16 I.U./g feed upon the vitamin A retention in the liver and on alpha-tocopherol concentrations in plasma, erythrocytes and selected tissues. Hepatic retinol concentration and retention were linearly correlated with dietary concentration and intake. Alpha-tocopherol in plasma varied over time but not with vitamin A dosage. Alpha-tocopherol concentrations in erythrocytes, liver, heart, diaphragm, and tongue were independent of vitamin A supply. It is concluded that practical vitamin A supplements did not affect the vitamin E status of growing piglets.
