Effects of temperature control in seedling period on bolting and flowering of Eustoma grandiflorum

These studies were conducted with Eustoma grandiflorum to make clear the effect of the raising seedlings at cool temperature on preventing from rosetting and the effect of low temperature treatment of rosette seedings formed in high temperature of summer on rosette breaking. 1. The rate of bolted stalks rose by conducting the raising seedlings at cool temperature, 15 degree C at night and 25 degree C in the daytime, from just after seeded. The degree of the effect differed a lot among cultivars. 2. Almost all cultivars flowered at the rate of 100% by the raising seedlings at cool temperature for 9 and 5 weeks in July and August seeding respectively. The flowering seasons were from December to March with the cultivars seeded in July, while those were from April to June in the August-sown cultivars. 3. With the July seeding, the weight of cut flowers was large when the temperature management after setting was carried out at 15 degree C. In the August seeding, the flowering period was early and the weight of cut flowers became large when the temperature was managed at 20 degree C. 4. The rate of bolted as well as flowered stalks rose by the low temperature treatment for 5 weeks at 10 degree C. When the low temperature treatment was carried out, the viability of seedlings during the treatment and the rate of flowered stalks after setting were raised by illuminating for 14 hours at 500 lux.
