Endometrial morphology vs endometrial ethynylestradiol uptake/fertility, after oral contraception

Circulating ethynyl-estradiol (EE-2), endometrial EE-2 uptake as well as histological studies were simultaneously performed in fifty one women who interrupted norgestrel + EE-2 in order to achieve pregnancy. Duration of contraceptive use varied from three to ninety six cycles. The observation included studies from the 1st throughout the 6th month of no oral contraception; during this period EE-2 in plasma ranged from 7 to 299 pg/ml while the endometrial uptake of the synthetic estrogen reach levels of 1 to 19 ng/g, and the morphology showed a 55% of secretory patterns compatible with fertility. Even so, only two women became pregnant during this period of observation. A tendency of EE-2 decrease both circulating and endometrial show that the retention continues up to the 6th month of no medication. Whether or not this synthetic molecule does not interfere with the intracellular receptor to develop a well defined secretory endometrium but does interfere with the process of synthesis and secretion of specific endometrial proteins cannot be disclosed from this study.
