This work was carried out to study 385 and 363 lactations, respectively, from Holstein and Brown Swiss cows sired by 11 and 10 sires of the respective breeds. Heritabilities were estimated by half-sibs correlation. The estimated values were milk yield (0.28 +- 0.22 and 0.37 +- 0.21), fat yield (0.19 +- 0.13 and 0.21 +- 0.16), fat percentage (0.46 +- 0.27), and 0.33 +- 0.21), and lactation length (0.10 +- 0.15 and 0.02 +- 0.07) in Holstein and Brown Swiss breeds, respectively. The estimated repeatability values in Holstein and Brown Swiss cows were 0.46 +- 0.06 and 0.49 +- 0.05 for milk yield, 0.39 +- 0.04 and 0.44 +- 0.04 for fat yield, 0.48 +- 0.05 and 0.35 +- 0.05 for fat percentage, and 0.17 +- 0.03 and 0.38 +- 0.06 for the lactation length.
