It was studied the effect of some environmental factors on milk production of a Holstein herd. The data came from a purebred herd of the Agricultural Research Farm of Minas Gerais State in Tres Pontas - Minas Gerais Brazil, located in the southern region of the State. It was studied 107 lactations and the average milk production from May 1982 to January 1987 was 3849.34 +- 1034,68 kg, with a coefficient of variation of 26.87%. There was a significant effect for the following variables (P lt 0,01): a) The regression analysis showed that the length of the lactation had the greatest effect on the milk production, with mean and standard deviation of 287.62 +- 58.11 days. b) The live weight at the calving time was 520 kg, and varied from 411 to 554 kg. The cows showed live weight gain of 71 kg during the lactation period (520 kg at calving time and 591 kg at the end of lactation). The live weights at calving time were 502, 511, 531, 521 and 570 kg in the years of 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986, respectively. For the class from 498 to 554 kg live weight, the estimate of milk production was 4138.25 kg. For every kg of live weight increase at the calving time here was an average increase of 7.6 kg of milk yield in this class, and above for each kg of increase in live weight at the calving time there was a decrease of about 3.69 kg of milk. c) The greatest milk production was associated with cows initiating lactation in the dry season (april-september) of the year (4028.4 kg).
