Evaluation of chickpea germplasm for resistance to ascochyta blight

Chickpea blight caused by the fungus Ascochyta rabiei (Pass) Labr. is a factor limiting chickpea production in Pakistan. Genetic resistance plays an important role in controlling the disease. In the present study forty-five chickpea mutant lines were tested for their resistance to Ascochyta blight and other morphological characters under artificial inoculation in the field. None of the lines showed complete resistance to Ascochyta blight. Most of them (91%) were moderately susceptible while a small portion (9%) was highly susceptible. Some of the moderately susceptible lines showed good agronomic characters. Mutant line CMN-63-2/81 gave larger and more number of pods and seeds. This and some other mutant lines could be used in further breeding programme against Ascochyta blight.
