Extended post mortem examination at slaughter of culled sows and gilts 2. Reasons for culling, findings of the genital- and urinary tract, body condition, season. Analysis of associations

Dansk Veterinaertidsskrift 80(22): 955-960, Nov 15

Nearly 1400 culled sows and gilts were examined at slaughter and the association between slaughter findings and farm recordings were studied. Farm recorded reasons for culling which could be directly explained by disorders and dysfunction of the genital and urinary tract accounted for 55 per cent of all reasons for culling. Old age accounted for 19 per cent of slaughtered sows with an average parity of 7.4. Average parity for all culled animals was 4.2. The diagnosis: small inactive ovaries were predominantly found in animals in poor condition, whereas cystic ovaries and urinary tract inflammation were most often found in sows in good condition. The frequency of cystic ovaries was double in winter and spring compared to frequency in summer and autumn.
