Winter, spring, and alternative growth habit in barley are briefly described. Published data on the inheritance of growth habit in barley are discussed. Historical aspects of research on the genetic control of growth habit in barley and the development of modem theory on the determination of this trait are reviewed. Data concerning location of genes for growth habit and their linkage relationships with other genes are presented. Data on distribution of the genes for growth habit in barley are-reported. Information on the influence of genes for growth habit on valuable breeding traits is presented.
