Genetic variability for seed characters in cotton (Gossypium herbaceum L.)

Nine seed characters were studied in twenty diverse G. herbaceum L. genotypes. Highly significant differences were found for seed index, seed protein, shoot length, seedling dry weight and seedling vigour. The differences for percentage hard seed, germination and root length were non-significant. Heritability (bs) values were high for seed index (58.1%), seed protein (52.7%), shoot length (49.0%) and seedling vigour (49.0%) and low (37.7%) for seedling dry weight.
