The physiological responses of lactating crossbred cows under housed conditions were compared with those that were reared in the open without any housing in a hot-humid climate. In the afternoon, the cardiac rate, respiration rate, rectal and skin temperatures were all significantly (P lt 0.01) higher in the exposed cows but in the mornings, these cows recorded significantly (P lt 0.05) lower rectal temperature to indicate that during the night, they could dissipate this excess heat by remaining in the cooler environment under open conditions. The multiple linear regression analysis of climatic components with physiological responses under unsheltered conditions revealed significant (P lt 0.05) negative influence of solar radiation on cardiac rate. The wind velocity was negatively correlated (P lt 0.01) with respiration rate, rectal and skin temperatures and was positively correlated (P lt 0.01) with cardiac rate, highlighting the beneficial effects of higher air movement in a hot-globe environment under house conditions; the black-globe temperature alone executed a positive and significant (P lt 0.05) influence on respiration rate indicating that the black-globe thermometer deserved to be used more extensively for evaluating the thermal characters of animal environments.
