Crossing T. aestivum with T. turgidum, T. dicoccum and T. durum spp. sphaerococcum is difficult. The success of T. turgidum times T. aestivum crosses is greater in case bread wheat is the female parent, while in the cross with T. dicoccum the percentage of seed set is higher in case the tetraploid species is the female parent. However, the quality of hybrid seeds and plants is higher in crosses with both species when T. aestivum is the female parent. The first hybrid generation is intermediary and uniform in morphological characters, F-1 hybrids have higher growth criteria but are inferior to the parental forms in parameters characterizing fertility. F-2 hybrids segregate into plants of parent type and new forms, however, plants of intermediary type predominate and among those of parental type tetraploids are in larger number.
