Immunological cross reactivities among proteins of the major light-harvesting chlorophyll protein complexes and the large subunit of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase were studied. Marine unicellular algae belonging to various taxonomic groups were examined with antisera raised against these proteins from different plant sources. The algae were: Dunaliella salina (Dunal) Teod. (Chlorophyceae), Isochrysis aff. galbana (Tahitian T-ISO) (Prymnesiophyceae), Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) Takano (Bacillariophyceae) and Nannochloropsis sp. (Eustigmatophyceae). Antisera were raised against the corresponding proteins isolated from Swiss chard, I. galbana and Nannochloropsis sp. In general, the large subunit of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase, a chloroplast-encoded protein, showed a relatively high degree of immunological cross reactivity; the light-harvesting proteins that are presumably nuclear-encoded proteins were less immunologically related. The eustigmatophyte Nannochloropsis sp. showed stronger immunological relatedness to Isochrysis than to Dunaliella.
