In vitro cell selection: Production and characterization of Nicotiana tabacum L. cell lines and plants resistant to the herbicide chlorsulfuron

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) cell lines resistant to the herbicide chlorsulfuron (CS) have been produced by cell selection technology. The CS resistance is retained at the whole plant level and transmitted to the progeny. Biochemical and genetic analyses strongly suggest that the observed tolerance to CS is due to a qualitative genetic alteration of acetolactate synthase (ALS), the target enzyme of this herbicide.
