Intensive treatment of bone sarcomas of miscellaneous histology: Malignant fibrous histiocytoma and chondrosarcoma

Intensive treatment of bone sarcomas of miscellaneous histology: Malignant fibrous histiocytoma and chondrosarcoma

Oncologia (Madrid) 15(8): 351-358

From October 86 to December 90 patients with malignant bone fibrous histiocytoma (9) and chondrosarcoma (3) have been treated with a multidisciplinary approach including neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy, en bloc bone tumor resection, intraoperative readiotherapy, surgical defect reconstruction and external beam irradiation. Patients with chondrosarcoma did not receive chemotherapy. Tumor was located in the femur (7), humerus (1), fibula (1), iliac (1), sacrum (1) and isquion (1). In 5 (42%) the maximal tumor diameter was over 10 cm, together with and extensive component of soft tissue involvement. Tolerance to the treatment was acceptable. Patterns of tumor recurrence were: 1 case of local persistence-progression and 2 cases of lung and bone metastasis. The median follow-up time for the series is 19+ months (range 2+ to 50+ months). At the time of analysis 9 patients are alive and free of neoplastic disease.
