Investigation on the incidence and persistence of maternal antibodies against Turkey Rhinotracheitis in turkey chicks

Investigation on the incidence and persistence of maternal antibodies against Turkey Rhinotracheitis in turkey chicks

Archiv fuer Gefluegelkunde 57(6): 275-280

In order to investigate maternal antibodies in turkeys against Turkey Rhinotracheitis Virus (TRT), multiple sequential bloodsamples from 30 poults between 1st day and 20th day of age were taken and screened for TRT-antibodies using ELISA. Positive antibody-titers of different values were found in all 30 tested sera. The titers decreased between the 6th and 13th day depending of the titer of the first day. In a 2nd trial an investigation was carried out to known, if maternal TRT-antibodies are specific against different virus isolates. Blood samples were taken at 1st day of age from 20 turkey flocks originated from different countries and examined in 3 different ELISA systems against the French VCO3-virus, the English BUT 8544-virus and the German STG761/88-virus. Day old poults tested originated from 20 parent flocks, 4 housed in Germany, 4 in Canada and 12 in France. It was shown, that turkeys from Germany reacted positively against all 3 virus isolates, birds from Canada had no antibodies against TRT-virus and turkeys from France only had positive titers against the homologous virus isolate VCO3.
