Investigations on the dairy production of Polish Black-and-White cows from commercial herds: I. The possibility of increasing milk production and improving milk composition from cows maintained in state farms

Investigations on the dairy production of Polish Black-and-White cows from commercial herds: I. The possibility of increasing milk production and improving milk composition from cows maintained in state farms

Prace i Materialy Zootechniczne 0(44): 107-114

Cows with the lowest milk yield were selected out of 566 Black-and-White dairy cows, maintained in a typical commercial state farm. Over a 305-day lactation the animals selected were ensured proper nutrition and management. The results indicate that the genetic potential of cows maintained under commercial conditions of a typical state farm renders possible an increase of milk yield per lactation by at least 900 kg FCM, while retaining the high fat and protein content (4.0 and minimum 3.2%, respectively). The authors conclude that nutrition, mainly during the winter months, when poor quality hay and silages constitute the basic ration, is the principal factor limiting the full expression of the genetic potential of cows in commercial herds.
