Liquid and solid digesta flow rates from the rumen of buffaloes fed on straw based diets supplemented with urea molasses mineral block licks

Twenty Murrah male buffaloes fitted with rumen fistula (21/2 to 3 years) were divided into 5 groups of 4 each. Gr I was fed only paddy straw ad li, Gr II paddy straw ad lib + concentrate mixture to meet the CP requirement, Gr III paddy straw ad lib+urea molasses mineral block (existing) free choice, Gr IV paddy straw ad lib+UMMB 'C' free choice, Gr IV paddy straw ad lib+UMMB 'C' free choice and Gr V paddy straw ad lib+UMMB 'D' free choice. DMI (kg/d) was significantly (P gt 0.01) lower in Gr I as compared to the Gr II, III, IV and V. Water intake was not affected due to different treatments. The values of rumen fluid volume were also lower in Gr I than in Gr II, III, IV and V. However, these differences among the groups were non significant (P gt 0.05). Flow rate of liquid (1/d) in Gr I was significantly (P lt 0.05) lower than in other groups. Positive and highly significant relationship was found between RFV and body weight, drymatter intake and water intake. Passage rate of solid digesta (g/d) from the rumen was significantly (P lt 0.01) lower in Gr I than in Gr II, III, IV and V. The results indicate that supplementation of various UMMB licks to only straw diets increased the liquid or solid digesta passage rate from the rumen.
