Macroscopic observations of a maturation process in eelpout (Zoarces viviparus L.) from the southern Baltic. A proposed gonadal maturation scale

Macroscopic observations of a maturation process in eelpout (Zoarces viviparus L.) from the southern Baltic. A proposed gonadal maturation scale

Fisheries Research (Amsterdam) 30(1-2): 151-155

Macroscopic changes in the ovaries of eelpout from the Southern Baltic are described. A new scale of maturation for females is proposed and a maturation cycle determined. This scale deals with developmental phases of fertilised eggs embryos and larvae, as the eelpout is viviparous. The three developmental periods are identified and divided into seven stages. The description of the maturation cycle for males is based on Maier's scale. Length at first maturity is also estimated. Results indicate that in the eelpout ovaries there are embryos of different ages. There are differences in eelpout reproduction between localities.
