Magnetic compass and learning of the Y-axis (sea-land) direction in the marine isopod Idotea baltica basteri

The marine isopod, Idotea baltica basteri, was examined to determine whether it possesses a magnetic compass. Dark room trials on 345 adult marine isopods caught about 1 m from the shore of the Island of Palmaria, La Spezia, Italy, were conducted under the natural magnetic field, with an artificial magnetic field deviated to the west, and with the horizontal component zeroed. The results indicate that I. baltica uses the earth's magnetic field to assume the direction corresponding to the Y-axis (sea-land) direction of its home beach when no other orienting clues are available; consequently it has a magnetic compass mechanism. Further experiments showed that this species can change its magnetic compass set point using data supplied by local orienting cues.
