A study of the size distribution of pelagic metabolic activity was carried out at a Mediterranean frontal station offshore of Fuengirola (Spain). Metabolic activity was estimated from bacteria to zooplankton, using the electron transport system activity technique. The results show that metabolic activity decreases as a power function off body size at the community level of organization. This finding is in agreement with the hypothesis of QUINONES (1992) regarding the distribution of respiration by size in the pelagic ecosystem.
