Mutants of Agrobacterium radiobacter altered in nitrogen metabolism and associative interaction with plants

Agrobacterium radiobacter 5D-1 is a saprophytic nitrogen fixing bacterium that is able to associative interaction with plants. The mutants of A. radiobacter altered in nitrogen metabolism (Nif-, Nm, Nr) and formation of a calcofluor-binding structures (Cal-) have been isolated and characterized. Cal - mutants was found to be deficient in the formation of fibrils for attachment to the surface of rape roots and decrease the acetylene reduction activity in associative system with rape. Nm and Nr-mutants show acetylene reduction activity but can not grow without ammonia or glutamine as nitrogen source. Some Nr-mutants and Nm-mutants are characterized by increased acetylene reduction activity in association with rape. Inoculation with some of these mutants stimulates the plant growth.
