New neogene molluscan and mammalian sites from Thrace, Greece

New neogene molluscan and mammalian sites from Thrace, Greece

Comptes Rendus de l'Academie des Sciences Serie II A Sciences de la Terre et des Planetes 324(5): 427-433, March

The investigations in the Xanthi-Komotini Basin (Thrace, northern Greece) have provided useful data about the stratigraphy and biochronology of the Neogene/Quaternary deposits. A "lower group" and an "upper group" of sediments were distinguished. Three new localities with mollusc fauna have been found. Their faunal composition and similarities suggest euxinic (eastern Paratethyan) origin and latest Miocene age for the higher part of the lower group. The mollusc fauna deposits are overlain by terrestrial deposits of upper most part of "lower group" including a new mammalian fauna. Preliminary determination of the material and comparison with other eastern Mediterranean faunas suggest early Ruscinian (MN 14) age.
