Non-genetic factors on the productive performance of Holstein breed herds in Minas Gerais state

The objective was to evaluate non-genetic factors on the productive performance of Holstein breeds, in Minas Gerais State - Brazil. A total of 12625 lactations, from 1988 to 1992, of 8405 cows from 129 herds belonging to three breeders nucleous: one from the Zona da Mata and two from the South region of Minas Gerais were used. The characteristics evaluated were the total milk and the total fat yields. The lactation length was from 150 to 460 days. The means, standard errors and coefficient of variation for milk and fat total yields were 5067.18 +- 8.75 kg and 19.4% and 173.57 +- 0.30 kg and 19.7 1 %, respectively. The effects of nucleous, herd-year of calving nested within nucleous and season-age at calving were studied using the lactation length as a covariable. The effects of the variables nucleous, herd-year of calving nested within nucleous, season-age at calving and lactation length were significant (P lt 0.01). The effects of the herd-year of calving nested within nucleous and length of lactation explained more than 40% of the total variation of the characters. Both the milk and total fat yields increased up to 86 to 92 months of cows age, reducing after that. The highest yields were during the dry season. The mean length of lactation was 301 +- 0.5 days. It was concluded that the age of physiological maturity for milk production in the Holstein breed is 86 to 92 months. It means that the yield data should be adjusted for age of calving and season for utilization in selection programs.
