The proposed nursery practices can produce physiologically healthy, properly mycorrhized Douglas fir seedlings inoculated with Laccaria bicolor S 238 N that meet FFN outplanting standards for afforestation purposes. Production costs are kept down to a level comparable to conventional techniques by using a low-concentration inoculum, high density sowing and an accelerated production cycle over two instead of the usual 3 years obtained by late summer transplanting in fumigated soil. In addition, the symbiont under scrutiny behaves well with respect to intensive cultivation techniques and cold storage in sealed bags.
