On the Spanish Flora: Two failed projects of the middle nineteenth century

On the Spanish Flora: Two failed projects of the middle nineteenth century

Anales del Jardin Botanico de Madrid 54(1): 622-626

The need for a "Spanish Flora" was also felt among the pharmacists of this country during the mid-nineteenth century. Here we report two collective projects, both unsuccessful, with specific interests in the therapeutic use of plants which were carried out by a well-characterized professional group. The results of those efforts show a tack of scientific methodology in the project design, and an unclear concept of classificational and even nomenclatural systems utilized by those authors. The limited botanical knowledge displayed by the majority of the participants in the projects renders their results useless, leaving their ambition of producing a "Spanish Flora" as an unattained ideal.
